Is there any downtime or recovery needed for Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal doesn't require any downtime. You can resume your daily activities immediately after the treatment.

Before Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Avoid Hair Removal Methods

Refrain from waxing, tweezing, or other treatments that remove hair from the root before your Houma laser hair removal session. Your hair follicles must have hair in them for the treatment to be effective. The laser targets the hair's melanin (pigment) and requires the hair to be in the active growth phase (anagen phase).

Sun Avoidance

Steer clear of exposure to the sun for the 4-6 weeks leading up to the session of treatment. Sun-tanned skin contains more melanin, making it easier to attract laser energy.

Skip Cosmetics

Do not apply lotions, sunscreens, perfumes, or other cosmetic products to your skin immediately before the laser hair removal treatment.

Shaving

Shave your treatment area 1-3 days prior to the session. The goal is to achieve a close shave, leaving no hair above the skin's surface. Leave enough visible hair for the laser technician to identify the treatment area.

Note: A mild charring effect might occur on any stubble affected by the laser, leading to a temporary odor of singed hair, which is normal.

Immediately Following Your Treatment

Expect mild swelling and redness at the treated area right after the session, which could persist for up to 2 hours or more. The redness might continue for 2-3 days, resembling a sunburn.
To alleviate any discomfort or swelling, you can apply gel packs or ice (avoid direct ice contact) during the initial hours following treatment. If swelling or redness persists, continue using ice packs.
Makeup can generally be applied immediately after treatment, unless there's blistering.
Avoid exposing your skin to the sun until it returns to normal without swelling or redness.
Refrain from scratching or picking at the skin in the treated area. Avoid further hair removal treatments (such as tweezing, electrolysis, or waxing) that could disturb the follicles in the treated area.

Post-Treatment Hygiene

Gently wash the area and pat it dry for the first 3 days following treatment. Avoid scrubbing.
After day 4, you can gently exfoliate the treated area.
Approximately 5 to 10 days following the treatment, you may observe the shedding of surface hair. This shedding can sometimes appear similar to the growth of new hair, but in reality, it signifies the expulsion of hair shafts that were previously beneath the skin's surface. The complete expulsion of these shafts typically occurs within a span of 7 to 10 days.
Bathing is unrestricted, but treat your skin gently during the first 24 hours, akin to managing sunburn.

For Subsequent Visits

During your upcoming appointment, provide the practitioner with details regarding how long the redness persisted after treatment and when noticeable new hair growth appeared in the area. Sharing this information enables the practitioner to tailor the treatments for achieving your optimal results.
